This is to respond to some of the outrageous statements made by Mark Clark of Jamer Materials Ltd. in his letter of March 4, 2009, titled, "Quarry opponents ignore science".

Everyone concerned with open pit granite mining of the hills of Bayside should be concerned about making sure our new Rural Plan is not changed to allow this. They must voice their opinions now in writing, or at the meeting on March 18 in person.

Meeting time, date and place:
March 18 - 7 pm at the NBCC in St. Andrews.

I remember I was sitting with my wife; first-born, Kim; and our friend Eric McCartney in a barren walk-up apartment on the island of Montreal when the Cuban Missile Crisis was developing. We watched President Kennedy's announcement and the developing drama on our little black and white TV.

Art MacKay's recent piece  in the media got me thinking of my own story, and wondering how many others have traveled a similar path.  Recently I read Bernd Heinrick's "The Geese of Beaver Bog" (he is also known for his "Winter World", other books on the Maine woods and the intelligence of ravens).  I now can understand how many young couples, geese, human, and otherwise devote considerable energy and thought to selecting a nest site to settle down and maybe raise a family.
